If you are the beginner, it's good for you to develop at least couple programs on the assembler just to be confident in particular controller architecture.

Then study "C", it is realy worth the efforts.

Don't use AVR assembler. It has several nasty bugs.

Use IAR assembler. It's free on the www.atmel.com and I don't know any bugs.
