The ATmega161 was published in the August 1999 databook.
Priorities were changed putting more focus on the ATmega163
which has been around for some time now.
First silicon samples of the ATmega161 arrived around June 2000,
but had some issues. There were some issues with this batch and
it was decided a little bit later to not introduce the part and wait for
the die shrink device (which will now be called the ATmega162).
Due to popular demand from some large guys,
"We don't care about your bug list, we want the part anyway", the
part entered limited production.

Errata should therefore be carefully checked before using the part.

Some distributors may make the decision to not sell the part
due to the increased support level brought by redeuced functionality.
