TI's new digital signal processor (DSP)-based TMS320DRE310 digital baseband, which utilizes software from RadioScape, Ltd., saves designers the time and cost of adding many features externally to differentiate their products. It is the first DAB baseband to include on-chip support for features such as record and playback from flash memory or a MultiMedia Card (MMC), time-shift recording and the capability for simultaneously listening to and recording different channels.

"TI's DRE310 digital baseband allows us to quickly develop differentiated digital radio products for the market, such as the DR301 portable multimedia DAB receiver with time-shift recording, a built-in MP3 player and voice recorder, scheduled for release in the 4th quarter of 2003," said Ike Park, CEO of Personal Telecom. "The highly integrated TI solution enables us to offer unique, affordable products that appeal to our customers."

The DRE310 also accepts a wider range of audio and data bit rates than previous TI baseband solutions. An increased audio rate of up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps) allows the system to receive the full range of digital audio signals, and the supported data rates can process Digital Multimedia Broadcast (DMB) applications.

With this level of integration and increased Eureka DAB capability, the DRE310 will power several types of applications, including home, portable, handheld, PC and especially automotive. Automotive DAB/CD radios require the ability to decode the variety of broadcasted bit rates and must support different CD audio decoders, such as WMA, MP3 and pulse code modulation (PCM). These radios will benefit from the DRE310ґs DAB features, such as:

FM and ensemble switching, which ensures uninterrupted radio when leaving a DAB coverage area;
Transport Protocol Experts Group (TPEG), which delivers road traffic updates;
Announcement support, which automatically tunes receivers to real-time news flashes or emergency information broadcasted on another channel;
Transmitter Identification Information (TII), which can be used to display the location of the car

Portable and handheld applications will have the ability to read and write to flash memory cards, utilizing the DRE310's direct interface to a MMC, Memory Stick and SD. These applications will also benefit from the on-chip USB 2.0 full speed (12 Mbps) interface, which allows both an easy connection to the PC and also record/playback capabilities.

"The introduction of the DRE310 digital baseband demonstrates TI's continuing dedication to the Eureka DAB market," said Naresh Coppisetti, Digital Radio business manager at TI. "The DRE310 follows an already successful DRE200 baseband. As the market grows in the UK and elsewhere, the most integrated DAB baseband will differentiate DAB radios, while maintaining or lowering their cost. We are excited to see how our customers use this technology in bringing innovative products to consumers."

Support, Availability, Packaging and Pricing

TIґs extensive worldwide field support simplifies the task of digital radio design using the DRE310. Evaluation modules (EVMs) are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2003, as will documentation, including userґs guides and application notes. To speed design and make purchasing easier, TI will offer the DRE310 baseband bundled with other components, including analog parts, such as power management and data converters.

TI's TMS320DRE310 Eureka DAB digital baseband processor will sample in the fourth quarter of 2003. The DRE310 will be available in either a 179-lead MicroStar ball-grid array (BGA) or a 144-lead thin quad flatpack (TQFP). Pricing is $18 each in sampling quantities of 1K or less.
